Piazzarama: Happy Feet

In the world of the emperor penguin, a simple song can mean the difference between a lifetime of happiness and an eternity of loneliness. When a penguin named Mumble is born without the ability to sing the romantic song that will attract his soul mate, he'll have to resort to some fancy footwork by tap dancing his way into the heart of the one he loves. Directed by Babe mastermind George Miller, Happy Feet tells the tale of one penguin's quest for love, and features an all-star cast of vocal talent that includes Robin Williams, Hugh Jackman, Elijah Wood, Nicole Kidman, and Brittany Murphy.

Igor may have been born with a brilliant mind, but unfortunately everyone around him is too distracted by his pronounced hunchback to notice. Forced to serve as a lowly lab assistant to nefarious scientist Dr. Glickenstein, Igor longs for the day he will become a mad scientist, take top prize at the Evil Science Fair, and finally win the heart of village vixen Gretchen.

Rob Gordon is the owner of a semi-failing record store in Chicago where he sells music the old fashioned way- on vinyl. He's a self-professed music junkie who spends his days at Championship Vinyl with his two employees Dick and Barry, who occupy their time making “top five” lists of subject-specific songs. When Rob’s girlfriend Laura walks out on him, her revisits his last five relationships to reflect on where he keeps going wrong. Sophie, a diligent teenage girl working in her family's hat shop, finds her life thrown into turmoil when she is literally swept off her feet by a handsome-but-mysterious wizard named Howl. This innocent encounter engages the vain and conniving Witch of the Waste, who transforms her into a 90-year-old woman. Sophie's efforts to break the curse bring her to Howl's magical moving castle, where she befriends Markl, Howl's apprentice, and the hot-headed fire demon Calcifer. City Of Lights 50th Anniversary Celebration

On February 20 1962, John Glenn became the first American to orbit the Earth in the Friendship 7 spacecraft. On this mission, Glenn flew over Perth and the people of Perth turned on their lights to acknowledge his mission. Glenn observed that the city was visible from space and Perth become known worldwide as the ‘City of Light’. This early space exploration mission set the stage for the Gemini and Apollo programs which culminated in NASA landing men on the moon.

To commemorate the 50th anniversary of Glenn’s orbit, on Monday 20 February 2012 an outdoor public event will be staged in the Northbridge Piazza, featuring a live audio and video link to the International Space Station as it orbits the Earth.

This free public event is being organised by the State Records Office of Western Australia, the WA Museum, the City of Perth, the Hills Amateur Radio Group, the Amateur Radio International Space Station and NASA.
State Archivist Cathrin Cassarchis said the highlight of the event will be an opportunity for young people to speak with and ask questions of the astronauts on the International Space Station.

Western Australian Museum Chief Executive, Alec Coles said people should come down to the Piazza on Monday 20 February from 5pm to see this unique public event; the first time school age children in Perth will have the opportunity to talk publicly with the International Space Station.
“The ‘City of Light’ anniversary event will also be supported with activities, displays and memorabilia highlighting Western Australia’s involvement in space exploration and the development of telecommunications in WA over the last 50 years,” said Mr Coles.

City of Perth Lord Mayor, Lisa Scaffidi said the City was pleased to be involved in hosting a free public event that engaged the community and recalled a very significant event in Perth’s history.

“Being able to communicate directly with the space station from the lawns of the Piazza shows how far technology has developed over the past 50 years,” Ms Scaffidi said.

“Perth attracted international attention in 1962 and since then we have developed into an international destination connected to the world.”

City of Lights screening: In The Shadow of the Moon

Between 1968 and 1972 twenty-four Americans journeyed to the Moon. They remain the only human beings to have visited another world. In this film the Apollo astronauts tell their own story, and share their reflections on what these great voyages of exploration meant to them and to humanity. The film features intimate and revealing interviews with prime crew members from every Apollo mission from Apollo 8, the first voyage around the Moon, to Apollo 17, the last lunar landing, during which two men lived on the surface for more than three days and nights. The interviews are interwoven with re-mastered NASA film footage, much of it never used before.

2001: A Space Oddyssey

A mind-bending sci-fi symphony, Stanley Kubrick's landmark 1968 epic pushed the limits of narrative and special effects toward a meditation on technology and humanity. Astronaut Dave Bowman and four companions set off for Jupiter on a spaceship controlled by HAL 9000, a revolutionary computer system. When HAL threatens the lives of the crew themselves, Bowman has to escape - and in doing so, uncovers the true intention of the mission.

Double Feature: Life Cycles (2011) & The Collective (2004) – M

A spectacular mountain biking back-to-back double feature, starting with Life Cycles, the 2011 winner of the X-Dance film festival. Life Cycles tells a spectacular story of the bike, from its creation to its eventual demise. Shot over 3 years, using Ultra HD cameras and experimental film techniques, Life Cycles documents the many stories surrounding the mountain bike and its culture. Explore deserts, rainforests, factories and cities on a visually stunning journey with thought provoking narration.
Next up it’s the The Collective, which was born out of a desire to assemble the world’s best freeride mountain bikers with the most talented photographers and cinematographers. Shot in beautiful 16mm film, The Collective features complicated and highly choreographed film sequences that exhibited a previously unheard of level of flow. The resulting footage renders some of cycling's most difficult maneuvers and lines - massive gap jumps, insane wall rides, and break-neck descents on rail-thin singletrack - in an almost effortless light. The Collective simply make the impossible look easy.

Sunday Piazza Live: Mal Jennings & The Jazz Ambassadors

Mal Jennings Jazz Ambassadors with Denise Dale – Play the Hits of the Great Trumpet Players

Mal Jennings: Started playing Cornet in the Beaufort brass Band at the age of 12. Moved to Ballarat in 1960 and joined 'The Dixielanders' - a four piece jazz group. Attended the Australian Jazz Convention in 1963 with the 'Eureka Stompers'. Eventually formed the Ballarat Jazz Messengers who became the house band for Ballarat Jazz Club. Judith Durham sang at the Club with the band before Seekers fame.

During the 60's, 'The Ballarat Jazz Messengers' played the nightly theme tune for a local live TV show, and also at a local Coffee Lounge that was owned by Mal, known as 'Gallery 321'. He freelanced with various groups including Frank 'Traynor's Jazz Preachers', Owen Yeatman's Jazz band, and 'Steve Waddell's Chicagoans', and 'Lachie Thomson's Whispering Gold Orchestra'.

He taught music at a Technical College in Ballarat up until he moved to Brisbane in 1980. There he worked with the Mileham Hayes 'Dr Jazz' band, the 'Pacific Jazzmen', and Allan Leake's 'Storyville Jazztet' where he played regularly at Surfer's paradise. He joined the Glenn Miler Tribute Band, while leading his own band - the 'Mal Jennings Jazz Giants'. He also played with the 'Up the river Jazz Band' at the Story Bridge Hotel every Sunday for over 15 years. Moved to Perth in WA in 2008 and formed the 'Mal Jennings Jazz Ambassadors' which plays regularly at the Perth Jazz Club here in Perth.

Denise Dale - Vocals:-
Is a well known singer who has been singing at various Jazz clubs and many other venues for many years. Known as the 'Pocket rocket' - she's very much appreciated and popular where ever she sings.

Bill McCallister - Trombone:-
Is probably the best Trombonist in WA in his field. Teaches at a local Catholic College at all levels of music. Also plays for various live musicals that come to Perth.

Phil Hatton - Reeds:-
A wonderful Reed man who has spent some time in USA playing with various top bands. Phil is now back in Perth and has a full time teaching position at 3 High Schools.

Barry Bruce - Piano:-
Taught for years at the Perth Conservatorium of Music, and is a top Jazz pianist in the style reminiscent of the great Teddy Wilson. Barry is hard to get sometimes as he's often busy with other pursuits. Barry is still the best in his field in Perth, and is a brilliant Jazz pianist.

Tim Woolley - Drums:-
Also a teacher. Tim teaches at various schools in Perth, and plays with various bands in Perth. Tim is a fine player, and really knows how to 'swing' a band!

Murray Wilkins - Bass:-
Murray is also probably the best in his field as both a 'traditional' jazz bass player and also of the more 'modern' idiom. Has also taught for many years at the Perth Conservatorium of Music.

Proudly presented by the City of Perth on Sundays in February and March, enjoy a lazy afternoon of live laid back music performances from local acts at the Northbridge Piazza.

Unfortunately, the local hotels have a strict "no witches" policy and the police have taken a dim view of her recent aerial mischief-making. She's saved from the street by a kindly baker's wife, who offers her room and board in exchange for her delivering by broom the baker's wares. Soon she befriends a college-aged artist, an old women who fusses over her, and a boy her same age who is nursing a massive crush. The idea for this project arose from a common belief that music has the power to break down boundaries and overcome distances between people, resulting in a series of collaborative music performances from artists around the world.

Each week Lablogotheque invites an artist or a band to play in the streets, in a bar, a park, or even in a flat or in an elevator, filming the whole session. What makes the beauty of it is all the little incidents, hesitations, and crazy stuff happening unexpectedly. Their goal is to try and capture instants, film the music just like it happens, without preparation, without tricks.

Summer Love - Happy Ever Afters (2010)

Maura is a single mother living in Dublin. Her furniture has been repossessed and she’s about to be evicted. For a fee, she's marrying Wilson, an African who is facing deportation. Her nine-year old, Molly, thinks she's going to get a dad. The compulsive Freddie is re-marrying Sophie, who has managed to crash-diet her way into her old wedding dress. When both bridal parties arrive at the same venue for the respective receptions, things start going really haywire. Freddie and Maura's paths keep crossing, Sophie thinks the two are having an affair, immigration officers are stalking Wilson, and Molly's figuring out what's really up. Sophie's father threatens Freddie with bodily harm if anything goes wrong – but how can it not?
